Biography:  E. H. Williams, a prominent farmer of Warren County, was born Onslow County, N. C., February 28, 1836, the third of a family of seven, born to N. W. and E. N. (Cox) Williams. The parents were married in 1830 in North Carolina, and in 1837 came to Tennessee, here the father engaged in farming until 1851, when he established a mercantile store at Tullahoma. Soon after his location in that town he was appointed postmaster and held that position until his death in 1853. He was of English descent, his wife of Irish. The subject of this sketch as reared on a farm and at an early age chose as his occupation, the carpenter trade. He worked at this trade until 1853 when he turned his attention to farming and has farmed very successfully until the present time. He has in connection with farming traded in stock very successfully and in 1883 and 1884 sold goods in Viola. April 29, 1861, Mr. Williams' marriage with Fannie Cunningham was solemnized, and to this union one child was born, W. E., born July 14, 1865. Mrs Williams died in 1867. January 15, 1874, Mr Williams married Janie Albritton, of Snowhill, Ala. This union resulted in the birth of two children: Charley, born February 14, 1876, and Frank, born March 29, 1878. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and died March 18, 1880. Mr. Williams married Nannie M. Finch, of Warren County, January 8, 1883, and to them one child has been born, Alice, born September 8, 1884. Mr. and Mrs. Williams are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and he is a Democrat in politics. In 1876 Mr. Williams was elected justice of the peace and has held that office to the present time.

?The company served through the Mexican war as Company B, Second Tenessee Infantry, commanded by Col. Wm. T. Haskell. At this date, 1886, only twenty of these veterans are living and of that number Dr. A.W Hawkins, J.F. Townes, H,T. Bridges, M. Bunn, W.G. Crockett, A.R.B. Churchwell, Joseph Hamilton, Wright Mebane, E.D. Shoffuer and Ephraim Williams are citizens of Carroll County.?

On p. 13, a S.N Williams is listed as a dealing in Dry goods.

P. 17 In 1882 E. R. Williams was elected principal of the McTyeire Institute, which was a boarding-house for young ladies. The trustees of the Methodist Church built a fine brick academy to be occupied by the school in spring of 1882.

?E. W. Williams
E. W. Williams was born in Carroll County, five miles east of Huntingdon, April 17, 1832. He is the sixth of seven children-six sons and one daughter-born to Rowland and Mary (Mills) Williams. His father was born in North Carolina, where he was raised and married, and soon after this he moved to Tennessee and settled in Carroll County, where his family was reared. He died at his home in 1836. The mother of our subject was born in North Carolina, and died at the homestead in 1841. Mr. Williams was raised on the farm, having the benefit of the schools in the county, and has made farming his business. He served as constable of his district in 1865, and also served as deputy sheriff of the county from 1866 to 1870. He was in this year, after the expiration of his deputyship, elected as magistrate for six years, but resigned to accept the office of sheriff, tendered him by the voters of the county. He served as sheriff three terms, which is the constitutional limit. In 1881 he was elected notary public by the county court, and bas served in that capacity ever since; he is also magistrate of his district and has served three years in this office. Mr. Williams was married in Carroll County July 30, 1850, to Miss W. J. Edwards, daughter of Nathaniel Edwards, a farmer. From this union were nine children. of whom eight are living: Sarah A. (Rogers), William A., John B., James N., Elizabeth J., Washington H., Loruza M. and Ella Alpine. Rowland N. died July 30, 1880. The mother of this family was born in Carroll County in 1829. Mr. Williams is a firm Republican, a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is exceedingly popular in his county, possessing the respect and confidence of his fellow citizens, being a man of liberal ideas and correct principles. He has 360 acres of land on which he raises cotton and tobacco and large quantities of the cereals. The farm is two miles east of Hollow Rock, and with its comfortable dwelling house is a desirable home. He belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church, as does his wife and all of the children, except one.?

?Sanford N. Williams
Sanford N. Williams, general merchant, is a native of Madison County, Tenn., and was born June 8, 1842, son of B. T. and Margaret (Longmire) Williams, and is of Scotch-Irish lineage. His father was born in North Carolina in 1811, and his mother in Alabama in 1805. The family came to West Tennessee about 1837, and settled in Madison County. The father died in Carroll County in 1870, but his widow is residing in Huntingdon. Mr. Williams is the second of six children, six children and is self educated. He continued to reside on the farm until 1862, when he enlisted in Company G, Seventh Tennessee Cavalry, United States Anny, and served fourteen months. In 1867 he began clerking in the store of E. T. McGill in Huntingdon, and from 1868 until 1870 was deputy revenue collector for what was then the Seventh District. In 1875 he engaged in general merchandising, and is now one of the leading business men of Huntingdon. Fredonia Adams became his wife in 1868. She was born in Henderson County, Tenn., in 1847, and is the mother of two children: Benjamin 1. and Thomas N. Mr. Williams is a Republican, and cast his first presidential vote for A. Lincoln. He joined the Masons in 1865, and became a Royal Arch Mason in 1867. His wife belongs to the Christian Church. Mr. Williams is not a member of any church, and is rather liberal in his religious views.?

?Lorenzo F. Williams
Lorenzo F. Williams, farmer and citizen of the Twenty-fourth District, was born in Carroll County in 1843, and is the ninth in a family often children, six of whom are now living. The father, Thomas Williams, was born in North Carolina about 1795, and was of English ancestry. He received a good common-school and business education, and in 1817 married Harriet Blair. In about 1832 he immigrated to Carroll County and settled in the Thirteenth District, where his career ended. He was an active, industrious man, and at the time of his death, which occurred about 1848, was the owner of about 450 acres of land. The mother was also a native of North Carolina, born in 1809 and died about 1857. The father having died when Lorenzo was but a child, he was reared under the tender care of a mother's watchful eye. He received his education in the neighboring schools, and partly at Parker's Cross Roads in Henderson County. November, 1866, he married Caledonia McCall, a native of Carroll County, born in 1849, and the daughter of Dr. Henry and Frances McCall, of Clarksburg. Eight children were the result of our subject's marriage: Thomas H., Sidney H., Lorenzo P., Lizzie Frances, George W., Marietta, Bertha Mabel and John H. After marriage our subject settled in the Thirteenth District for one year and then removed to the farm on which he now resides, having owned it three different times. He was in the mercantile business for some time and also lived in Kentucky a year. He is now the owner of 160 acres of valuable land all well improved, three and a half miles northeast of Clarksburg. He is a liberal supporter of all charitable and religious institutions and a Democrat in politics, casting his first presidential vote for Horatio Seymour. He was formerly a member of the Masonic fraternity but is now demitted. Mr. and Mrs. Williams are both prominent members of the Christian Church and are much esteemed citizens.?

?In accordance with the act of creation the first bench of justices of the peace for Smith'County, consisting of Garrett Fitzgerald, Wm. Alexander, James Gwinn, Tilman Dixon, Thomas Harrison, James Hibbetts, Peter Turney and Wm. Walton, met at the house of Tilman Dixon, near Dixon Springs, on the 16th of December, 1799, and organized the court of pleas and quarter sessions by electing Garrett Fitzgerald, chairman thereof, and Moses Fisk clerk pro tempore. The next day the following county officers were permanently elected by said court, to wit: Sampson Williams, clerk; John Martin, sheriff; Chas. F. Mobias, coroner??

?The chancery court of Smith County was established by an act of Legislature passed October 29, 1824, and it?s first term was begun and held on the third Monday of May, 1825, with Hon. John Catron presiding as chancellor, and Hon. Robert C Caruthers clerk and master. Prior to 1840 this court was presided over by Chancellors John Catron, Robert White, Nathan Green, Will Cook, Wm. B Reese and Thomas L. Williams, in the order here named.?

?W. L. Kemp, Jr., was born in Smith County in 1842, and is of a family of thirteen children born to Asa and Mary (Williams) Kemp. The father was born in 1823, in West Virginia, of English descent. He moved to North Carolina with his parents in 1833, and in 1840 came to Smith County, where be now resides. He is a prosperous farmer owning 220 acres of fine land. He is an influential and respected citizen. The mother was born in Smith County in 1827, and died in 1882. Our subject received a fair education in the schools of his native county. In 1861 he entered the Confederate Army, in William H. Hart's independent company Tennessee Infantry Volunteers. Soon after the organization he was elected orderly sergeant, and served in that capacity until 1863, when he was transferred to the command of Gen. John H. Morgan, cavalry brigade, when he was again elected to the same rank. He took an active part in the battles of Farmington and Corinth, Miss.; LaVergne, Stone River, Snow Hill, Milton, Dixon Springs and Greasy Creek, Ky. December, 1863, he was made prisoner and taken to Carthage, where he toot the oath of allegiance and returned home. In 1864 he married Sarah T., daughter of William D. and Lucy H. McCawley, who was born in 1848, and died in 1869. Two years later, in 1871,. Mr. Kemp was united to Mary A., daughter of William and Jane Hockette, who was born in 1855. To this union there are seven children: Claude E., Maud L., Eva S., Eddie M., Asa E., Sallie J. and Hettie L. In 1870 our subject was chosen to fill the unexpired term of eighteen months, of C. W. West, justice of the peace, of the Fifth District. August, 1871, he was elected by a large majority to the same office, which he held for six years, being re-elected at the end of the term. He was again called to fill out the unexpired term of E. J. Yeaman, deceased. In 1886 he was commissioned by Gov. William B. Bate as notary public, for four years. For seventeen years he has been one of the leading commercial men of the county. He was a heavy lumber dealer, and built two saw mills. In February, 1882 he had the misfortune to lose heavily by the rising of the Cumberland River, a large quantity of lumber being carried away by the water. He is now a member of the firm of Witt & Kemp. They have an extensive mercantile trade, and are among the most enterprising and successful merchants in the section. Mr. Kemp is a Democrat, and gave his first presidential vote for Horatio Seymour in 1868, and is also a member of the Masonic order. He is an earnest and respected communicant of the Missionary Baptist Church.?

?D. H. Witt, merchant, was born in 1849 in Smith County, Tenn., one of six children of D. A. and Elizabeth (Williams) Witt. The father was born in West Virginia and is a farmer and lawyer. Spending a short time in Macon County when a boy he came to Smith County, Tenn. Besides practicing law considerably he was justice of the peace and a heavy dealer in horses. The mother was born in Smith County and died in 1849. With a common school education our subject in 1876 began mercantile life, and now has a stock worth about $3,000. He married Fanny Kemp, daughter of B. and L. Kemp, and born in Smith County in 1848. Their four children are Valeria E., Robert A., Howard S. and Geo. W. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in his political faith he is Democratic?
