Williams Lineages Underway
This
section is for people to post the various Williams lineages they
are working on. This is an effort to publicize that brick wall
you may or may not be hitting in hopes of finding others who either
have information or are at the same wall. This section is now in a database and to make surfing the entries easier, I have set it up to display 15 lineages at a time. Simply use the next and previous buttons to navigate around!
And, as another improvement to the site, you can now add your own lineage to the list without having to email me directly! Simply visit the lineage submission form and follow the instructions! It's as easy as that!

I am looking for the father and ancestry of Joseph Williams b ca 1747/8 m. Martha Perritt/Parrott about 1767 when their daughter, Edith (Eady) was born and Henry Williams b Aug. 23, 1769. All the records I have on Joseph & Martha are in and around Duplin and Sampson Co., NC. Joseph became a preacher, chosing the Primitive Baptist church to serve. Joseph Williams sold land to George Harris,son-in-law in 1792 in Sampson Co and to his sons Parrot, Henry and William Williams in 1798 prior to moving to Anson Co., NC just over the line from SC. Joseph Williams was a Rev. War patriot and i have a copy of his service.
Any information or clue would be much appreciated.

My father was William G. Williams and my mother is Jo Ann Castillo-Williams. My father's family is unknown to me. His father died when he was only 12. His name was Eddie Edward Williams. I only know of a sister who married into the Gotlich family. My father's mother was a Holliman. Her family is part Page, Holiman, Helton, and Nelson. I have an idea where my paternal grandfather's family came from Alabama. He was born in 1905. My father's family history is cloudy. I do know that one of the great-gradnfathers was an Choctaw Indian in some war and married a Irish woman. I would like to know if there is any significant family history I can relate to. I have a huge family, this I do know. I have always been interested in my family's history. Please help-Thank you

Notes: Charles (d 1692) had sons named Charles (Jr.) and William. Evidence is fairly strong that a William, who died in 1717, in Prince George County, VA, was the son of this Charles. This William d 1717 also had sons named Charles and William, though it appears that Charles may have been the eldest, contrary to the usual naming procedure of the time.
Charles (d 1762) lived for many years on Second Swamp but eventually settled on Otterdam Swamp, which had become Brunswick County at the time of his death. This Charles had sons named Thomas, Charles, Benjamin, William and Jones – not necessarily in that order. Both his sons William and Jones migrated to what is now Rutherford Co, NC. William was probably one of the older sons, since he witnessed on behalf of his father in 1749 in a suit filed by Lawrence House.
Though Charles of Otterdam Swamp died in Brunswick Co without a will in 1752, his death and details are known, based on the estate administration by his son Thomas (Brunswick Co Will Book 3, Inventory 1752, p. 78). He had bought and sold land in the Otterdam Swamp area, and part of this land he gave to his son Benjamin in 1749 (Brunswick Co Deed 17 Aug 1749 Charles Williams of Brunswick County to his son Benjamin Williams, one-half part of all that tract containing 200 acres which he purchased from Charles Stewart on Otterdam Swamp. Witnesses: Ingram Blankes, James Flower, Jane Morris, George Hamilton. Notes add “land on which Charles now lives.”)
The activities of Charles’s sons include these: 1/ Benjamin’s will, written 26 Dec 1776, was proved in Greensville Co, VA (part of Brunswick Co until 1781) 23 Dec 1784 by Thomas Lawrence and on 24 Feb 1785 by John Bishop. 2/ Thomas, in his will, written in 1754, left land to his son Thomas Jr. and also to his brother Jones on Bedningfield or Beddingfield’s Creek. 3/ Jones left Brunswick Co after selling land in Dec 1772 (the land he had inherited from his brother Thomas on Beddingfield’s Creek); he and his wife Elizabeth Ledbetter bought land in Rutherford Co, NC in Dec 1773. (4/ Charles had left Brunswick Co by 1749.) Several of these items provide strong circumstantial evidence for William being the son of this Charles Williams.
William sells land in Brunswick Co (Brunswick County Deed Book 6, page 270 William (W) Williams & his wife Elizabeth of St Andrew Parish in Brunswick Co to Howard Hurst of sd parish. 6 Aug 1756. (amount torn). 50 acres on the east side of (torn) Branch, joining the old line, John Whittington. Wit: Edward Goodrich, James Olliver, Wm Hayward, Anne Goodrich. Proved 24 Aug 1756. Probate indicates that Betty the wife of sd Williams relinquished her right of dower; proved again 27 Jun 1758 (torn). Archd Wager CC )
It is not absolutely clear that this is the land William had obtained from his father-in law in 1752 (Brunswick County Deed Book 5, page 170. Thomas (T) Lawrence of Brunswick Co to his son-in-law William Williams of Same. 31 Mar 1752. Deed of gift & 5 shillings. 335 acres on the south side of Nottaway River, joining on the east side of Hickses (Hixes) Branch, Charles Stewart. Wit: Daniel (x) Hix, Charles Clanton, Moses Johnson. Proved 31 Mar 1752. Litt Tazewell CC.) But the fact that his wife Elizabeth relinquishes her right of dower would generally indicate that the land had come from her father. Thomas Lawrence, William’s father-in-law, had proven his brother Benjamin’s will in 1785, showing a strong connection between these families.
It is possible that William and Elizabeth did not finalize the 1756 deed until 1758 because of the imminent birth of their first child William, b 1757. This is mere speculation, but there is proof, by William Jr.’s oath in his Revolutionary War Pension Application, that he was born in 1757 in Brunswick Co, VA, and the fact that he mentions that he has the family Bible indicates he was the eldest son, so this seems at least a likelihood.
The William Williams who sold land in Orange Co, NC in 1768 would appear to be the same as the one who sold land in 1758 in Brunswick Co, VA, primarily because it is his father-in-law again from whom he obtained the land (Brunswick County VA Deed Book 11 (Part 1), p 103. William (W) Williams of Orange Co NC to Nicholas Blanks Sr of Brunswick Co. 29 Dec 1768. 35 Pounds VA. 285 acres on the south side of Nottoway River as by deed to sd William Williams from Thomas Lawrence Sr, joining Hick's Branch, Benjamin Harrison, Howard Hurst. Wit: Penny Hurst, Benjamin Harrison, Charles Jones. Proved 26 June 1769 & again 28 Jun 1773. P. Pelham Jr. CC.). (It is also possible that it is the same land shown in 1752 in Brunswick Co, VA and that the state line has simply changed – both mention the same river and branch.)
More research needs to be done to identify if this is the same land or when Thomas Lawrence gave or sold this land to William; the records of Orange Co, NC are very sparse. More research is also needed to locate William Williams Sr. prior to his arrival in Rutherford Co when records show he bought land in 1786, although a road docket puts both William Sr. and William Jr. on Cathey’s Creek as early as 1785, and pension affadavits for William Jr. swear that he and Nancy were married by 1785 and living on Cathey’s Creek. It is possible that both men were there earlier, but there is also a possibility that William Sr. lived for some period of time on Troublesome Creek in what was then Guilford Co, NC on land that he sold in 1793 (original of deed at http://www.co.guilford.nc.us/services/index.php). (He sold it as a resident of Rutherford but had owned it since at least 1783 because he is mentioned in another deed as a boundary.)
There is proof that William Jr. (b 1757) was in Rutherford Co, NC as early as Mar 1779, based on his Revolutionary War Pension oath (part of it is available online at American Revolution Pension Statements http://southerncampaign.org/pen/r11606.pdf ; family and other affadavits of it are found on (www.footnote.com/image/28145063 and www.footnote.com/image/28145067.). It is possible he came prior to his father’s arrival, perhaps living with his Uncle Jones, who had settled in the Cedar Creek/Cove Creek area of Rutherford Co.
In 1792 William Sr. tranferred Rutherford Co land grant No. 325 that he received in 1786 to “William Williams Junr my son.” when it was resurveyed as Grant No. 627. The grant shows 100 acres on Monks (or Mont or Mount) Branch on Cathey’s Creek. William Sr. signs with a “W” with a half-circle above it.
William Williams Jr. is found on Green River, what was still Rutherford Co (Polk Co today) as early as 1797, although there is a record of his selling the Cathey’s Creek land in 1798. He bought additional land in Green River in 1803, and William Sr. was still alive as late as Oct. 1805 when he sold a small parcel of land on Cathey’s Creek.
Walter Watson Williams was the probably the youngest son of nine children of William Jr. and Ann/Nancy (possibly Middleton). He died c. 1801 and is buried, along with his spouse Millie Green, in a now-bulldozed cemetery near Union Hill (Point Lookout), Henderson Co, NC. Jonas K. Williams was born c. 1827 and died aft. 1891 in Fairview, Buncombe Co, NC; his grave is unknown, thought to be one of the unmarked ones at Cane Creek or Fairview Baptist Church. His son Walter Shuford Williams was born 1853; although his tombstone at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Henderson Co, NC says “Wm. Shuford,” his marriage certificate to Mary Louisa Collins in 1876 clearly states that he is “Walter S.”
Comments: Heath Williams is also a descendant of Jones Williams, another son of Charles Williams d 1752, through his father’s mother’s line.
Compiled with considerable research and help from Gary Young, Flora Dooly Barrett, Joyce Flynn Jackson, Michael Gray Williams, Ollie Lee Williams, William G. Mitchell and numerous other DNA Group 8 Williams descendants. Jeaneane Williams 5 July 2009
