Williams Lineages Underway

This section is for people to post the various Williams lineages they are working on. This is an effort to publicize that brick wall you may or may not be hitting in hopes of finding others who either have information or are at the same wall. This section is now in a database and to make surfing the entries easier, I have set it up to display 15 lineages at a time. Simply use the next and previous buttons to navigate around!

And, as another improvement to the site, you can now add your own lineage to the list without having to email me directly! Simply visit the lineage submission form and follow the instructions! It's as easy as that!

My earliest Williams connection is Alpheus Williams b. March 1, 1796 in Lanesboro, MA Alpheus married Laura Powell (b. Feb. 9, 1799). They married on Nov. 11, 1817.

Alpheus and Laura had the following children:
Bingham Williams, b. April 17, 1822
Jeremiah A. Williams, b. November 1, 1827
Louise Rebecca Williams, b. March 7, 1833
Caroline Williams, b. Dec. 4, 1834
Myron Williams, b. 1836

Jeremiah A. Williams married Margaret Adele Gold (b. December 10, 1828) on May 15, 1850 in VT. They had the following children:
Laura J. Williams b. 1858
John C. Williams, b. May 17, 1861
George Alpheus Williams, b. March 30, 1868
Charles Williams, b. about 1870

John C. Williams married (1) Clara Phelps (no dates) and had two sons: Jere P. Williams, b. July 27, 1885 Curtis P. Williams, b. 1887. Clara passed away at some point after that, and then John C. Williams married (2) Nellie E. Worden (b. January 1, 1864) on April 22, 1891 in Denver, Colorado. They had the following children:
Margaret Elizabeth Williams, b. July 4, 1895
Alice D. Williams, b. February 2, 1892
Albert Worden Williams, b. December 31, 1893

Margaret E. Williams married Arthur Yale Mallory in 1917. They were my great grandparents. All of my information came from Nellie Worden Williams' family bible that I inherited from my grandparents. The information is well documented all the way back to Alpheus Williams, and then stops on the Williams line. We would appreciate it very much if someone knows anything of Alpheus Williams originally of Lanesboro, MA or Jeremiah who went on to live in Vermont. We know that there was more than one Alpheus and Jeremiah living around that time. We have always stumbled on the "other" boys, and not ours. Hoping someone recognizes "our" Alpheus or Jeremiah.

Looking for information on Thomas A. Williams and his wife. I have him in Macon County, TN in 1850 with three daughters: Mary L, Caroline, & Minerva. He appears in the 1820, 1830 & 1840 Smith County, TN Census, but I cannot trace his 1st wife nor his parents. He was the 1st County Court Clerk of Macon County, TN in 1842 and later postmaster of Macon County in 1850. He married 2nd Martha Clanton Owen--widow of Abner Owen--before the 1860 Census.

The Census has that Thomas A. Williams was born in North Carolina and according to his age in the Census, he was probably born about 1798. I have traced him through the Smith County TN 1820, 1830, and 1840 Census. He is in Macon County, TN in the 1850 & 1860 Census. After that, I have lost him. His 2nd wife and their children are in the 1870 Macon County, TN Census.

Thomas A. Williams has a brother William C. Williams. I do not know the name of his parents nor the name of his 1st wife. According to history book written about Macon County, TN (formed in 1842 from parts of Smith County and Sumner County, TN), Thomas A. Williams was one of the first white settlers in Smith/Macon County owning 337 acres of land between 1829-1837, and, in 1845, Thomas A. Williams lived in the 9th District--Macon County, TN owning 583 acres of land valued at $1,200. My line: Thomas A. Williams and his 1st wife-> their daughter Mary Laura Williams married James Alexander Brandon > their son George Alexander Brandon married Clara Larissa Dixon > their daughter Bessie Laurinda Lucinda Brandon married Washington C. Patterson > their daughter Joyce B. Patterson married William B. Green (these are my parents) > Patricia Green (me). Thomas A. Williams is by great-great-great grandfather. This is one of my brick walls. I would appreciate any help!

I am trying to locate the father of John Williams also known as Hog John Williams. Salt Lake City has his father George Washington Williams and his mother Nancy Burke. Now George Washington Williams may be correct but I cannot find anything to prove this. Nancy Burke was married to George Luther Williams and they never left Virginia. I have proof of this. Hog John was born in 1804 in Tenn. and died in Nov 1870 and is buried in the Williams Cem in Crawford Co. Ind. He married Mary Ann Allen in Orange Co. Ind on March 02, 1828. His first son was named Jordon Williams I wonder if this could be his father's name. His son John Rice Williams, my ggrandfather left Ind around 1885 and went by wagon train with other families to Evansville Ark. He married Elizabeth Mode/Moad. His only son was my grandfather Columbus Seymour Williams. He married Bam Baras Buckner in Washington Co. Ark. His children were: John Henry Williams; Williams Robert Williams; Calvin Leroy Williams; George Monro Williams;my father, Rita Lou Williams married John A. My Williams ancestors start with Jacob Williams, born 14 May 1823 near Seven Mile Ford in Smyth Co, VA. He was in Pike Co, MO by 1846 when he married, raised a family and died. I understand that there is a "Williams Cemetery" at Chilhowie, VA, a few miles(three or four) West of Seven Mile Ford. I do not know who Jacob's parents were. His sons did well, one MD, two Methodist ministers(one a DD) and an actor. They were my grandmother's uncles.

I have an ancestor, William F. Williams, born about 1799, whom I was able to find in the 1850 Columbia Township, Hamilton County, Ohio Federal Census. However the place of his birth is shown as, "unknown." I have not located him after this census record. He was married 18 April 1820 in Hamilton County, Ohio, to Millicent "Milley" Gar______. However, the marriage record page is torn and only the first 3 letters of her maiden name are readable. She was born about 1801 in New Jersey according to the same 1850 census. They had several children, including my ancestor, Harriet M. Williams, born 9 Dec. 1825 in ? Indiana and died 22 Oct. 1866 in Wayne Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana. She had married in about 1845/1846 - maybe in Butler County, Ohio, to James Stites, who was born about 1824 in Hamilton County, Ohio and was last known to be living in 1887 in Burlingame, Osage County, Kansas. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Henderson G. Williams

Henderson G. Williams was born April 22, 1832. All census records in which he appears (1860, 1870 and 1880) indicate his place of birth as North Carolina. In all the census records, he is listed as H.G. Williams. The name Henderson is found in Civil War documents. When first documented he is found living near Carrollton in Pickens County, Alabama, already married to Elizabeth Robinson (1835-1894) and having three small children. His occupation is listed as "artesian well borer." The town of Artesia, Lowndes County, Mississippi, is just across the state line from where he lived in Pickens County. In all census records for his wife, Elizabeth, shows Mississippi as her state of birth. Another artesian well is located in Greene County, Alabama, adjacent to Pickens County to the South. Did he help bore the artesian wells in this area?

Children of H.G. and Elizabeth Williams include: Andrew Jackson Williams (my great-grandfather) born February 5, 1854, Benjamin Franklin Williams born August 4, 1856, Jerome Napoleon Williams born October 1859, Lilly Williams born August 31, 1860, Robert Williams born 1862, Mary Williams born December 22, 1865, and Alice Cora Williams born July 5, 1871. Lilly and Mary died as infants and are buried in Old Memphis Cemetery in Pickens County.

Henderson Williams served in the civil war (41st Regiment, Company C) where he ws wounded in the battle of Chickamagua and furloughed home. After recovering from his wounds, he worked at the Forrest Hospital, Lauderdale, MS.

The son Andrew married Arazella (Arah) Haseltine Ferguson in 1873, and they started their own family. About 1880, the family began migration toward Texas. They are recorded in the census of Phillips County, Arkansas in 1880, all living together in the same household (Andrew & Arah had six children before 1880).

According to the obituaty of my grandfather, Willie Ernest Williams (1877-1952), the family arrived in Bell County, Texas, in 1883. Andrew and his family settled in Bell County. Elizabeth Williams died September 30, 1894, and is buried in the Dallas Cemetery, near Holland in Bell County. H.G. went to live with the second son, Ben, in Grayson County. He died there August 8, 1897. The Andrew Williams family subsequently moved to Milam County, where they lived near Cameron.

I have not found any information about Henderson G. Williams prior to 1860, including a marriage certificate. (The Pickens County courthouse was twice burned - once during the civil war and again by a lunatic prior to 1900.) Who were the parents of Henderson G. Williams? Who were his siblings? Where did his parents live in 1850? Where did they live in North Carolina and when did they leave? When did they arrive in Alabama? The same questions pertain to the wife, Elizabeth Robinson, but also remain unanswered - the 1880 census indicates that her parents were also born in North Carolina. They must have ariived in MS early, since she was born there in 1835.

Jessie May (Mae) Williams

Jessie May (Mae) Williams (my great-grandmother) was born January 7, 1870. She is first documented when she married James Wiley Williams on November 5, 1885, in Lawrence County, Missouri. The only clue to her possible parentage is the marriage license. Because both Jessie and James were under age when they wed (15 and 20), consent was required. Her consent was provided by F.M. Williams. His consent was provided by I.H. Williams (Isham Hall), known to be his father.

Jessie and James had two children following their marriage, a daughter Myrtle Williams was born October 4, 1886, in Missouri, probably Lawrence County. A son, Clarence Emory Williams was born March 1888, also in Missouri. After the birth of Clarence, the entire Isham Hall Williams family migrated to Texas. There, a daughter, Gertie Ethel Williams (my grandmother) was born on January 30, 1890. The Williams family settled near Caddo Mills, Texas, in Hunt County. Another son, Earl F.H. Williams was born December 18, 1892, in Hunt County, Texas. This son died August 18, 1893, and is believed to be the first burial in what is now known as the Paradise Stone Cemetery in Southwest Hunt County.

Following the death of the baby, Jessie became ill. Apparently doctors were not successful in treating her. In desperation, her husband took her to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Perhaps this was due to the belief that the mineral springs and baths there provided "curative power." Jessie died in Hot Springs January 24, 1894, and was returned to Hunt County, Texas, where she was buried next to her young son.

Jessie is a major brick wall. She should have appeared in two census records (1870 and 1880), but one of the unknowns is where her family lived during those years. When she married in 1885, the family would have lived near Buck Prairie Township, probably in Lawrence County, but maybe in Barry County, Missouri, as Buck Prairie was near the county line.

Searching the entire 1880 census for the United States, I have found numerous ten year-old girls with variations of the name: Jessie, Jessey, Jessie May, Jessie Mae, Jessey May, Jessey Mae, May, Mae, and J.M. I have even looked at listings with variation in the age (8 - 12), realizing that census records were not always accurate.

It was initially assumed that the F.M. Williams providing consent to marry was her father, but it could be a mother, grandparent, brother, uncle, and so it goes. I have not found any listing for a girl with any of the above name variations with a person named F.M. Williams (or variations) living in the same household.

A handed down story in my family holds that Jessie's parents also migrated to Texas, settling near the town of Wolfe City in far North Hunt County - on the line of Hunt and Fannin Counties.

Who are Jessie's parents? Where was she born? My grandmother's census information always indicates that her mother was born in Missouri, but this could be a misunderstanding. Where did her family live in 1870 and in 1880? Was F.M. Williams her father or some other relative? Any help appreciated.

John Thomas Williams

John Thomas Williams was born about 1795, in Virginia. He married Mary Hall (1795-1850) in Russell County, VA in 1816. John Williams is recorded in the 1840 census, Russell County, VA, which lists three sons and four daughters in addition to the parents. The family is also listed in the 1850 census of Washington County, VA. It is speculated (no documentation) that John Thomas was a son of Samuel Williams (1764) and Elizabeth Crump (1767).

Children of John Thomas Williams and Mary Hall Williams:

William R. Williams, born 1820
John Davenport "Jockey" Williams, born February 14, 1822
Isham Hall Williams, born December 10, 1825 (my ancestor)
John Williams, Jr., born 1826
Gemima Williams, born 1828
Matilda Willilams, born 1831
Charles Williams, born 1834
Sarah Williams, born 1836
Jerusha Williams, born 1838, married Elisha Harless in 1852.
Elizabeth Williams, born 1841

I have documentation on the lines of John Davenport Williams, Isham Hall Williams and Jerusha Williams Harless.

Isham Hall Williams, born December 10, 1825, Russell County, VA. Some time after 1840, Isham, John D. and William R. left the family and traveled to Southwest Missouri with their neighbors - the Hilton family. They settled in the Lawrence, Barry County area of Missouri. Isham and his brother John D. are credited with introducing wild mustang horses into the state of Missouri. They made frequent trips to Texas, rounded up the horses and drove them back to MO.

Isham went to the gold rush in California, where he is listed in the 1850 census of El Dorado County, CA. Failing to "strike it rich" he boarded a ship and took a trip around the world. In 1852, he returned to Lawrence County, MO, where he married Sarah Elizabeth Feaster (1836-1894).

Isham and Sarah had eleven children, all born in Lawrence County, MO

Mary Easter Williams, born June 14, 1854, married John Benson Peters, 1875
Sarah Angeline Williams, born November 8, 1855, married David Rudyard
Margaret Jane Williams, born November 25, 1859, married Milton J. Hughes, 1879
John William Williams, born September 30, 1860, married Arizona Wilson, 1884
Elbert Soviere Williams, born January 22, 1863, married Walkey Dudling
James Wiley Williams, born September 1, 1865 (my ancestor), married Jessie Mae Williams, November 1885.
Martha Catherine Williams, born February 14, 1868, married Jim Hodges
Charles Gilmer Williams, born January 20, 1870, married Martha Ida Gray, 1901
Frances Elzada Williams, born June 24, 1872, married Alphin A. Judy, 1887
Grace Marion Williams, born September 29, 1874, died 1876
Jasper Lafayette Williams, born April 7, 1879, married Lizzie Tanner

Isham Hall Williams served in the US Army during the Civil War. He was twice captured by the Rebels. He was captured once when he sneaked into a CSA camp to visit his brother-in-law who was wounded in the battle of Pea Ridge (Arkansas). He managed to talk his way out of the situation. He was later captured again, but managed to escape while being transported to POW camp in Little Rock. Also during the war, he got into a fight with the "camp bully" - resulting in the loss of his left eye.

* * * * * * * * * *

James Wiley Williams (1865-1935) married Jessie Mae Williams (1870-1894) in Lawrence County, MO on November 5, 1885. James and Jessie had two children while living in Missouri:

Myrtle Ann Williams, born October 4, 1886, married Oscar Willoughby
Clarence Emory Williams, born March 1888, married Lillian Hillis

Between 1888 and 1890, the entire Isham Hall Williams clan pulled up roots and migrated to Texas. They settled at Caddo Mills, Hunt County, Texas. Here James and Jessie had two more children:

Gertie Ethel Williams, born January 30, 1890 (my grandmother), married William E. Wilson
Earl F.H. Williams, born December 18, 1892; died August 1893.

I have information on most of the siblings. Many descendants live in the Hunt County area today.

Bethenia "Bethany" Williams

Bethenia "Bethany" Williams was born about 1780, place unknown. She died about 1810 in Hancock, Georgia. Bethenia was the daughter of Christopher Williams and Margaret White Williams. I have no birth or death info on Christopher or Margaret. They had three known children: Bethenia Williams (b. about 1780), William Williams (b about 1796) and Suzanna Williams (b about 1833). The wide gaps in birth years lead me to believe that there were others.

Bethenia married Greene Sims about 1801 in Hancock County, GA. They had eight known children spanning 1805 to 1824. After Margaret died the Sims family migrated to Perry County, Alabama. One of the children, named after her mother, was Bethenia Sims. Bethenia married Mathew Smith January 28, 1837, in Perry County. They had ten children including my great-grandfather John Frederick Smith (1851- 1896). After his marriage to Frances Snider and starting a family in Mississippi, they migrated to Limestone County, Texas.

SONS : THOMAS, ABEL, JAMES, JOHNATHAN, ALEXANDER, MOSES, AND POSSIBLY EDWARD AND MY GG GRANDFATHER, TILMAN P... DAUGHTERS: NANCY, JANE, SARAH SALLY, ANNA, AND RACHEL. OF COURSE, MY GGG GRANDFATHER, TILMAN P. WILLIAMS COULD POSSIBLE BE A NEPHEW OF ETHELDREAD, AS ETHELDRED HAD SEVERAL BROTHERS AND SOME OF THEM SETTLED IN RABUN CO AND NORTHERN GEORGA. I HAVE NO PROOF. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO PROVE OR DISPROVE A CONNECTION.

My grandfather, Harold Elbert Williams was born June 13, 1907 and died July 24, 1962 in Tyler, Texas. He married Bessie Viola James in Tyler, Texas on October 13, 1928. All I've ever known of this grandfather is that he was from Arkansas. Hunington's Disease runs through this line and I'm not certain if it came from his mother's line, Mary Catherine Mosley. I've located his father and mother in the 1910 census in Marion, Ouachita County, Arkansas. My grandmother always told me that there were 12 Williams children and 10 of them died of Hunington's. She was either wrong, or two of the children were born after the 1910 census (which is possible).

Charles Franklin William, Born about 1872 in Arkansas married Mary Catherine Mosley on January 12, 1893 in Dallas County, Arkansas. Charles states that both his parents were born in Alabama.

Children:
Cathren L. b. about 1894 (can't read this name well on census)
James E. b. abt 1895
Jessie D. b. abt 1896
Jerome S. b. abt 1898
Ethyl M. b. about 1900
Milton b. about 1901
Nannie b. about 1903
Ollie b. about 1905
Harold Elbert b. June 13, 1907
Henry E. b. abt 1910

My grandfather, Harold E. Williams and a brother came to Tyler, Texas between 1925-1930 and are buried in the Williams Cemetary in Smith County, Texas.

I am working on my Grandmothers paternal side of the family, The Williams line & seem to have hit a brick wall from the start. I cant seem to get any further than her Grandfather. Here is what I have so far.
William Henry (Bill) Williams married Sarah Carmack (Maybe Crawford)
Their children are:
Sam Williams (died at 17)
Lloyd Williams (Died at age 9)
Edna Williams (Born 1896 Died 12-26-1965)
Emma Williams (died at age 22)
Ela Williams (died at age 3)

Oscar Williams (born 1879 died 1960)
Charlie Williams (died at age 7)
& my G Grandfather Dave E Williams (died 4-2-1952)
Dave Williams married Allie Lee Cox (born Oct, 11 1900, unsure of date of death) They was married October of 1888 (unsure where, but in Tennessee) They had 4 children Joyce M Williams (born June 10th, 1922) Lloyd K. Williams (deceased, unsure of dates) Joe Williams (unsure of dates but died of suicide due to cancer) & Sarah Williams. Joyce & Lloyd were both born in Henry County Tennessee. I have found some old papers, look to be from a family bible of sorts, Sam, Emma, Ella, William Henry, Charlie & Lloyd (shows he was 9). Seem to have died of a Typhoid outbreak. I am not sure of this & when it happened or where. Also mentions an Orange Springs community (Tennessee) & not many are sure where that was. another page we found in the box with the old pages mention a Grandmother Williams drowning herself in a pond possibly in Selma AL. Mentions a surname of Snodgrass as well. on same page mentions a Ruth & Henry "Buk" Williams + a Grandfather, It mentions Ruth was a spy for the Confederacy & was caught taking information from the Union Army & giving it to the Confederate Army thus the Union troops & burned her house out. Also mentions she may have remarried a Yates. Was also mentioned at a family reunion that Ruth Williams was a great aunt of Hank Williams SR., unconfirmed).

I am searching for William Riley Williams. I have not had success in locating my great great grandfather. He came to Lafourche Parish, Louisiana at the age of 11 with Isaac Lush and Rebecca Bignal Brant. Lush and Brant were married May 19, 1824 in Adams County, Mississippi. It is unknown if they had children of their own and it is unknown why William came with them to Louisiana. In the 1820 census of Adams County Mississippi, Rebecca Brant (who was widowed in 1819 when John Brant died) was listed as neighbor of George Williams. Could there possibly be some sort of connection to George Williams' that is listed in that census. William Riley Williams was born circa 1831, unknown place of birth and died in 1899. He is buried in Williams Cemetery in Golden Meadow, Louisiana. His tombstone reads: William Riley Williams b. 1831 d. 1899 3rd Co. Washington La Art. CSA I am unable to locate any military records in reference to him having served in the Civil War. William married Phoebe Cocke (Cox) born 1837 died 1921, daughter of Pleasant Dasha Cocke (born 1807, married 1836, died 1883 in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana) and Pauline Lefort (born 1814 and died 1890). I am at a dead end.
