Williams Lineages Underway

This section is for people to post the various Williams lineages they are working on. This is an effort to publicize that brick wall you may or may not be hitting in hopes of finding others who either have information or are at the same wall. This section is now in a database and to make surfing the entries easier, I have set it up to display 15 lineages at a time. Simply use the next and previous buttons to navigate around!

And, as another improvement to the site, you can now add your own lineage to the list without having to email me directly! Simply visit the lineage submission form and follow the instructions! It's as easy as that!

THE MAINE WILLIAMS...My ancestor, John Williams (b.1808)was in Poland, Maine. His family came from f Stoughton, Massachusetts...His father, Benjamin, served in the Rev. War....John married Vesta Hamlin in 1832 in Vassalboro, Maine. This line also goes back to Mary Estey, who was hanged as a witch in 1692 in Salem, MA. If you are connected to this line I would be very interested in comparing notes!

My known James Williams was born in 1742, Virginia, probably m 1st a Rebecca Wallace, had four sons, William, Sanford, Morgan and Henry. M 2nd, Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Legg, they had Nancy, Elias,Jane,Elizabeth, Thomas, all born in VA, James, Sarah, b somewhere in KY and Mary Ann "Polly", b Highland Co., OH. They were in OH shortly after 1800.

I have located another James Williams, b 1742, King George Co., VA, son of Jonas Williams,Jr.and Ann Darnall. Children were David, Jonas, and James, all under 6 when their father died. I am trying to find who this James m, to no avail, a trace of his siblings. The mother later m Charles Garner and they had several children. Jonas, Jr. left land to his children and can only find record concerning David's -the mother evidently sold his land and they had to get a clear deed later with David's signature. Sanford and Morgan are Darnall family names, but there's no proof. I would appreciate any help you might give me.

Henry Williams-b: abt 1835 in North Carolina-parents born in North Carolina, names unknown, county and township unknown.

Henry served with 7th Cav, Company I (known more as Gen.Custards regiment) in the Civil War in Iowa. His military record states his DOB as 1835 in North Carolina. It also states that he was 5'8" tall, weight 150lbs, tanned skin, blues and black hair.

I think I have picked Henry up at about 1860 in Iowa. I have found a Census with a Henry Williams listed as a Farmer. birth yr listed as 1837 in NC. parents listed as being born in NC...so the criteria matches.

1870 Census shows Henry living in Sioux City,Iowa

Henry Williams- b: abt 1835 in NC-Farmer-parents born in NC.
Wife: Sarah Jane Willams (her maiden name was Winterringer)-born 1848 in Ohio-Fredrickstown

Children:
David Andrew Williams-b: 30 Aug 1865 in Smithland,Iowa
Sarah (also known as Elizabeth)-b:1867 in Smithland, Iowa, county: Woodbury
Nellie (possible real name: Ella) Williams-b: 1870 in Smithland Iowa.

Note: Official documents from Henry's pension file show that Henry Williams married Sarah Jane Winterringer 21 May 1863 in Sioux City,Iowa.

1880 Census:

Henry Williams-farmer, now living in township of Grant,Iowa, Woodbury Co.
Wife: Sarah

Children:

David Williams-1865,IA
Sarah Williams-1867,IA
Nellie Williams-1870,IA
Nettie (real name: Junetta) Williams-b:1872 in either Smithland or Grant,IA
Martha Williams (also known as Mabel)-b:1875 Smithland or Grant,IA
Eldora Williams (aka Dora)-b: 1877 in Smithland or Grant,IA

This family moved in 1885 to St Helena Nebraska. They had to have moved sometime b-4 June of 1885, because they are listed on the Nebraska 1885 State Census and their first child born in Nebraska was born in Oct of 1885.

Other children born:

Bessie Williams-b: Oct 10,1885 in St Helena, Nebraska
Daniel Oliver Williams-b: Feb 16,1888,St Helena,Ne.
Jessie James Williams-b: July 6 1890, St Helena,Ne.

Henry Williams died March 28th 1891 in St Helena, Ne. when he fell off a steep cliff. His widow Sarah, now with 5 children to feed moved to Yankton, South Dakota where son David and some her daughters lived. Sarah died in 1920 from Kidney failure in Yankton, South Dakota.

I have not been able to find Henry Williams parents, who are listed as being born in North Carolina. Sarah Jane Winterringer's line is well documented, and has a book published on her Ancestry.

This family line later migrated to Minnesota and then to Oregon & California

It has been rumored through the family line that there was Welsh and Cherokee Indian connection somewhere....so that is a possibility, given a few of Henry Williams description of him from pension records as being dark skin, blues and black hair....but who know with these Williams lines

Can U help connect the dots??

Thomas's father died shortly before he was born (Madison Co., TN) and I have not been able to determine his father's first name, or connect him to any Williams in that county at that time. Several Williams families and also at least one HUDSON family in Madison Co., TN by 1830. 1880 & 1910 Census say Thomas's father was b NC and his mother b TN.

Thomas and his mother, Mary "Polly" NEWSOM Williams, are named in the will of his grandfather, Balaam NEWSOM (d Dec 1840, Madison Co., TN will: 9 Mar 1841). Thomas's mother married 2) Richard LESTER about 1835 in Madison Co., TN and moved to Prairie Co., AR by 1860.

Thomas moved from Madison Co., TN to Rusk Co., TX in 1853 with a Newsom uncle, Lemuel. Thomas and his wife, Mary Ann SIMMONS, moved to Collin Co., TX in 1860 with her parents, sisters, and brother George. I have his marriage record, deeds, will and Civil War record. I also have a photograph of Thomas and his entire family, taken in 1893.

OBITUARY: Daily Courier-Gazette 8 Sept 1913, was titled "Another Pioneer Gone to Reward. 'Uncle Tom' Williams was one of the early settlers of the county and was highly respected and esteemed Christian gentleman. He served through the entire struggle [Civil War] and when the war was over and the smoke of battle had rolled away he returned to his home in Parker. He was one of the most propserous farmers in that community and a consistent member of the Baptist church. He was buried in Forest Grove Cemetery. He will be remembered by many who were not intimately acquainted with him, by the long suite of beard which he wore. He was very proud and took great care of his whiskers, which at the time of his death measured a little more than two feet in length."

He served in the Confederate 11 Cavalry Texas, Co. D, Young's Regiment. He enlisted 2 October 1861 at Camp Reeves.

I am looking for information on my great-great grandfather JB Williams, born in 1814 in Maine. JB married Ann Eliza (maiden name unkknown) B:1826 in NY and had at least 5 children: Clara B:Feb 1850 in Ohio, Henry Clay (my great grandfather) born 1852 in Ohio, Fred born 1854 in Ohio, Frank born 1856 in Ohio, and Charles born 1866 in Kentucky. We know that JB's brothers JL (B:1822), Bryant (B:1825) both lived with him in Ohio before moving back to Maine where they were all born. I am looking to find JB's parents who, according to the census, were both born in Maine in the late 1700s. I am also looking for Ann Eliza's maiden name. Henry Clay may have been married prior to his union with Rachel Anna Freeman, my great- grandmother with whom he had 3 children, Harry, Clara and Charles (my grandfather). According to the census, Henry claims to have 4 living children, so he may have had a wife and child before marrying R. Anna. I would be interested in knowing this wife and child's name as well. I appreciate any information on anyone in this family.

I am trying to locate a walter John williams who I believe was born in Oakland, California. The big difference in trying to locate them is that he was of Cheroke and Black heritage. I believe there is also a daughter ...barbara dixie williams somewhere in or around the Oakland area. I do have the bithdate..I believe...am trying to locate ANY williams with the same history. Most other williams all seem to be white...I know there are a lot of mixed williams and they are the ones I,d like to hear from. I,ve been trying for ages to locate them...I,m sure that walter is deceased by now...but there must be family there.

John D. Williams (b. ca 1812 NC) is found in the 1850 census of Knox County, Tennessee. His wife is listed as Mary LNU (b. ca 1811 in VA). I have yet to locate a marriage certificate for the couple, but based on the age of the known children assume that it was around 1836 in Knox County, TN. There are several Williams families in the 1850 census of Knox County, Tennessee. Of interest are Jacine/Jason Williams (b. ca 1800 NC) and Thomas Williams (b. 1800 in NC). All of them living in Subdivision 15 of that county. John D. Williams (pg. 73) and Jacine/Jason Williams (pg. 76) are listed on 3 pages from each other. Thomas is listed on page 13.

John D. Williams and Mary LNU had the following children:
1. Elizabeth J. Williams - b. ca 1837 in Knox County, TN
2. Loretta M. Williams - b. ca 1839 in Knox County, TN
3. Sarah D. Williams - b. ca 1841 in Knox County, TN
4. John D. Williams II - b. ca 1843 in Knox County, TN
5. Mary Ann Williams - b. ca 1847 in Knox County, TN
6. Mahala C. Williams - b. ca 1849 in Knox County, TN

John D. Williams II (b. ca 1843 in Knox County, TN) married Catherine E. Coker on 20 Sep 1866 in Knox County, TN. She was the daughter of Leonard Coker and Elizabeth Williams. Elizabeth Williams Coker was born ca 1812 in North Carolina. I feel that there might be a connection with the family of John D. Williams, but it is only a hunch right now.

John D. Williams II and Catherine E. Coker Williams had the following children:

1. Harry Oliver Williams - b. 08 Jun 1867 in Knox County, TN
2. John L. Williams - b. ca 1870 in Union County, TN
3. Leonidas Williams - b. ca 1873 in Union County, TN
4. James D. Williams - b. ca 1875 in Union County, TN
5. Mary E. Williams - b. ca 1879 in Union County, TN

I am hoping to find a connection for John D. Williams I (b. ca 1812 in North Carolina).
